A stroke is a brain attack.

It happens when the blood supply to part of your brain is cut off.  Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to your brain. Without blood your brain cells can be damaged or die.

Stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times a year in the UK.  That is one stroke every 3 minutes and 27 seconds in the UK.  Stroke is the fourth single largest cause of death in the UK and second in the world.

1 in 6 people will have a stroke, and over 40% of all strokes could be prevented if high blood pressure was identified and treated. Most people affected are over 65, but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies. We provide high quality, up-to-date stroke information for stroke patients, their families and carers.
