Join The Forever Friends Appeal team, or ‘Ted’s Team’ as it is more affectionately known, for the Bath Half Marathon to help make a real difference to the thousands of patients and their families who find themselves in need of the Bath Royal United Hospital each year. You can do something special today and choose to run for any ward or department that is close to your heart or the Appeal’s current major project, the RUH Cancer Care Campaign…

You may not know but each year alone the RUH treats over 2,200 new cases of cancer from the hospital’s extensive catchment area across Bath, Somerset, Wiltshire and sometimes even further afield. The RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising a minimum of £8.5 million towards the build of a new world class Cancer Centre, which will replace the current outdated facilities, with a Centre that will balance clinical expertise with the provision of a nurturing and therapeutic environment to help give our patients the very best care and experience possible.  To date the Appeal has currently raised £7.3 million but they need your support, and your running shoes, to help raise the final £1.2 million!

Whichever area of the hospital you choose to run for, you’ll be supporting thousands of local people who need the RUH… and there are so many other great reasons to be part of the team! As part of Ted’s Team, you’ll receive:

–   Your very own bright and colourful team running vest
–   A runners pack with helpful hints on raising sponsorship and a sample training plan
–   Support from the Appeal’s amazing Events Team – they’re only a phone call or email away
–   An opportunity to visit the RUH to find out more about the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, plus a tour of the currentfacilities

The Forever Friends Bath Half History:

Since the Forever Friends Appeal began back in 1999, Bath Half Marathon runners have together raised over £450,000 for the charity – raising funds to help all different areas of the hospital. Every year “Ted’s Team” are truly dedicated to the challenge and are always passionate about fundraising for a cause that is close to their hearts.

Past and current fundraising causes at the RUH:

Gamma CT-scanner – In more recent years, runners have raised sponsorship for the Campaign to purchase a new state-of-the-art Gamma-CT Scanner for the hospital. Having been purchased in 2012, this latest technology is now up and running and is used to diagnose some of the many types of cancer that can affect us, as well as heart disease, bone pain and neurological disorders.

The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care – Over several years £150,000 was raised by Ted’s Team to go towards the Campaign to build a new Unit for sick and premature babies at the RUH. The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care opened its doors in July 2011 to its first babies. The NICU has therefore been transferred from its small, cramped facilities into a pioneering new home. A pioneering holistic and therapeutic approach towards the new building has created a new low carbon unit allowing the staff to practise new methods of developmental care for premature and sick babies. With more than double the amount of space in this sustainable new building, parents are encouraged to become more involved in the day to day care of their babies, bonding with their baby and developing “skin to skin” techniques. The Forever Friends Appeal named a room in the new Dyson Centre after the “Bath Half” to show their gratitude.

RUH Space for Cancer Care Campaign – The Forever Friends Appeal is currently raising a minimum of £8.5 million to help build a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the hospital. The new Centre is costing £28 million to build; the project will therefore be a partnership with the NHS and charitable funds. The aim is to create a Centre where every brick is therapeutic, where clinical excellence can be provided with a holistic approach that delivers a uniquely beneficial healing environment with improved outcomes, an exceptional patient experience and a strong focus on long-term survivorship.
