To all our 2018 Bath Halfers

Thank you, to you all.

Cancelling today’s race was the toughest thing we’ve every had to do since we began organising the Bath Half 18 years ago. We were broken hearted on Friday, thinking of all our runners, our race charities and our volunteers, and all the training, effort and work you have put in to this year’s race. Although conditions have improved this morning, the conditions we faced on Friday and Saturday, and the effect on key suppliers, the advice we received from the council and police, and the forecast weather to follow left us no choice, our overwhelming priority has to be public safety.

The support and the lovely messages that you took the time to send us following that decision via social media and email, has really lifted us all here at Bath Half HQ, and we can’t thank you enough.

We are now working hard to get things sorted as soon as we can. There is a lot to do – we weren’t helped by the weather yesterday – when we had to literally dig our way into the office! The first thing we are working on is ensuring our runners’ entry fees are refunded. There are more details about that below.

We also want to give a special mention to our charity fundraisers. Despite the race not taking place, so many of you have raised so much money already for charity and many of you have told us that your donors are still willing to honour their donation to your cause. This is so wonderful to hear and I know how pleased our race charities will be. Already the Bath Half 2018 has raised £1.1million on JustGiving alone. How fantastic!

Here at Bath Half HQ we like to think that we’re a small team with a big heart. We want our race to make a difference and we hope that despite not being able to go ahead this year, it has still made a difference – whether you’re fitter than you were a few months ago, whether you’ve found new friends through your training or whether you’ve helped support the vital work of our charity partners.

We couldn’t create and sustain an event like the Bath Half without the support of our runners, our volunteers, our charity partners, our contractors, the residents and businesses of Bath – you are at the heart of the success of this race and are, quite simply, the best.

We look forward to seeing you on the start line in 2019!

Refund arrangements

We are working with our registration provider to build a refund process as easy and as simple as possible for our runners.  The process will be automated and the refund will be made to the card you paid with. If that has changed please do not worry – we will contact any runners whose refund is rejected by the system and make alternative arrangements for you to receive the refund.

If you paid your entry fee directly to a race charity then please contact your charity direct to discuss your options.


Donating your refund to charity

We have been overwhelmed by the number of runners wanting to donate their refund to charity. So we are going to offer an option for runners to donate their refund to the Bath Half Marathon Fund (managed by Quartet Community Foundation) which we set up fifteen years ago as a way of supporting small local charities and voluntary groups within Bath & North East Somerset. You can read more about the work of our fund on our website.

Please notify us using this form if you would to donate your entry fee to the Bath Half Marathon Fund. We’ll keep this form open for 7 days.

Alternatively please feel free to donate your entry fee to a charity of your own choice.


T-shirts and medals

Some of you have asked us whether we are able to send out medals and t-shirts to you if you run the 13.1 miles over the coming weeks and months and we have been wracking our brains to see how feasible this is.

Unfortunately we just don’t have the resources to be able to organise this – we are a small management team, with a core staff of four – and with thousands of you potentially wanting to do this we simply do not have enough pairs of hands to make this happen. We’re very sorry.

Instead we have decided that the t-shirts and medals will be recycled and the money we get from this process will be donated to charity. We hope you understand.


Please return your timing chips

Can we ask a huge favour of our runners? We need you to post your timing chips back to us (as soon as you can safely get to a post box!) Your chip was sent to you in a pre-paid envelope addressed to SportSystems – so you can just pop that straight in the post if the envelope is unopened. If you’ve already opened your envelope then please pop the chip into a fresh envelope with a stamp and post to:

If you haven’t yet opened your race pack, simply cross out your address , mark ‘Return to Sender’ on the front of the envelope and post your whole race pack back to us.

This will make a huge difference to us – the chips are recyclable and can be used again and again, which helps us keeps costs down for future events.

Next year's race

Again, many of you have been in touch asking us when you will be able to enter the 2019 race. We usually open entries on the Monday following race day, but we have decided this year to delay this while we work through the aftermath of the race cancellation. We will announce the date of our 2019 Early Bird entry launch on Friday. Thank you for your patience.
