A day in the life of a Bath Half volunteer
Are you thinking about volunteering at 2025 Bath Half on Sunday 16 March? Here’s what to expect when volunteering with us.
“The event simply could not happen without volunteers. They made sure we were safe, hydrated and fuelled. Thank you to all the volunteers!” Bath Half runner
Registering
We ask all individual volunteers to register on our Rosterfy volunteer dashboard. This only takes a few minutes and will give you access to the volunteering roles available. If you’re volunteering with a friend or family member, they need to sign up too and choose the same role as you.
You will be emailed an Event Information Sheet about one week before the event, which contains everything you need to know about Event Day, including a detailed summary of your role. The sheet will also be available on the Rosterfy volunteer dashboard, click on ‘Notifications’ to find it.
The different roles on offer
Finish Line
Location: Royal Avenue
Timings: From 08:00 until 14:00
Be part of the Finish Line cheer squad and congratulate participants as you hand out medals, T-shirts, and water!
Bag Drop
Location: Event Village in Royal Victoria Park
Timings: From 08:00 until 14:00
Be part of this important team which looks after participants’ bags. This a vital service on the day and you’ll be busy checking bags in before the event and handing them back out once participants have finished.
Drinks Stations
Location: On the route
Timings: From 08:30 until 13:00, depending on location.
Be part of the electric atmosphere on the course and help to keep participants hydrated by handing them water and energy gels.
Photographer
Location: Across the event
Timings: From 08:00 until 14:00
Take behind-the-scenes shots of volunteers, as well as fun group photos. You’ll need your own camera equipment and some photographic experience. Email our Volunteer Coordinator for more info.
Younger volunteers
We welcome volunteers aged 12 and over at the Water Stations and Bag Drop area. Volunteers aged 12 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult (aged 18 or over) and must have permission to volunteer from their parent or guardian.
“Volunteering is a great way to learn about some of the things that happen ‘behind the scenes’ in organising the Bath Half. The atmosphere in the Event Village is amazing.” Bath Half volunteer
What to expect on the day
An experienced event supervisor supports all volunteer teams – who will sign you in, answer any questions you may have and provide a role briefing before you start.
This will include important health and safety information. Feel free to ask any questions at this point or, of course, at any time during the day. Many of our supervisors started out as volunteers so they know what it’s like being new to an event.
If you’re volunteering on the course (as a course marshal or at one of the Drinks Stations), you’ll likely meet your supervisor at your volunteering location, which will be on your Event Information Sheet. Your supervisor will have your volunteer kit and lunch.
Otherwise, you’ll sign in at the Volunteer Welcome Area, a marquee in the Event Village. Your supervisor will meet you, take your name and give you an event T-shirt and jacket to wear. Don’t forget to help yourself to a lunch pack. You can then enjoy a hot drink and a snack while you wait for everyone to arrive.
Now the fun begins! If you’re in the Bag Drop Team, participants will be starting to queue to drop off their bags, while the Finish Line Team will be hanging up medals and unboxing T-shirts. Out on the course, the Drinks Station Teams will be filling thousands of paper cups with water while the course marshals test their megaphones.
Once the event starts the Bag Drop Team will organise the baggage bays to speed up collection when participants finish, while the Drinks Station Teams prepare to hand out cups of water and cheer on participants as they pass.
If you’re at the Finish Line you’ll be eagerly awaiting the first finishers (in 2024, the fastest runner finished in 1:04:42), ready to hand them a T-shirt and medal.
Volunteers usually say that once the start gun sounds, the day goes very quickly and is over in a flash!
Don’t forget to post your Event Day photos
There’s also the opportunity to post your Event Day photos on social media, to be in with a chance of winning free entry to a Run 4 Wales event or a shopping voucher.
If you have any questions, or if you are part of a group who would like to volunteer, email our friendly Volunteer Coordinator Team.
We look forward to seeing you on Event Day!
