Hello and welcome to our race week newsletter.
We are now just a few days from race day 2018 and we are busy bees – building the Runners Village and working flat out to ensure you have a brilliant day on Sunday.
The Bath Half will be going ahead as planned. For weather updates check the Cold Weather Alert page on our website and keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for any further updates.
Our most important message to you now is to enjoy yourself. If this is your first half marathon, or your first time at the Bath Half, then do take a moment to soak up the incredible atmosphere. Whatever the weather we usually welcome around 30,000 spectators around the course, whose support will help with the nerves and spur you on.
Be proud of what you have achieved already – the spectators see your amazing race day efforts, but they do not see the weeks and months of training that has gone into getting you to the race. It can be a tough, cold, wet and windy road to get to the Bath Half, so do take a moment over these last few days to feel really proud of what you have done already.
We can see from our social media feeds that so many of our Corporate Challenge runners are raising so much money for some great causes. Thank you so much! We can’t wait to see you all on race day and we’re looking forward to seeing which team wins the Corporate Challenge 2018!
Running High Events have been organising the Bath Half since 2000 and each year we watch as thousands set off together from Great Pulteney Street and return 13.1 miles later, having accomplished personal goals and making their mark on every single one of us who watch the race. You never fail to take our breath away. As always on race day, we’ll be there to cheer you on and help you in any way we can. Good luck!
Have a great race day!
From all of us at Bath Half HQ
| || Stay warm |
It looks like it could be a very chilly start to race morning, so dig out an old hoodie or jumper (or buy one from your local charity shop). Wear it in your start pen and discard to the side as you go under starter’s orders. One of our race charities will collect them up. Please – NO BIN BAGS – they can trip up other runners and can’t be recycled. Read more race day preparation tips over on our blog.
| || Keep moving this week |
Although you’ll be giving your legs a break over the coming days, think about keeping moving with some dynamic stretching. Our sports drink partner Lucozade Sport have put together a great video with personal trainer Bradley Simmonds with some ideas for stretches to help your legs recover before the big day. We’ve posted it up over on our Facebook page. We’ll be posting other useful videos and resources from Lucozade over on our social media pages.
| || Arrive nice and early |
Most of our runners will arrive at the Runners Village behind Bath Sports Centre on North Parade Road by 9am. Our help desk will be open from 8am. At 10am we will open the half marathon start pens and begin the task of getting you all into place ready for the start. There’s always a great atmosphere in the village, so arrive early for a chance to soak it up. We urge all runners and their supporters to check transport services with their provider before they travel. If you’re driving we suggest that you use Park & Ride, getting there early, checking city centre car park locations in case Park and Ride is full when you arrive. You can see more about travelling to the race on our website
| || Spending a penny |
The pre-race wee is always on a runners’ mind, especially when the nerves kick in! The main toilets in the Runners Village will be in Bath Rugby’s temporary east stand – these are ‘proper’ loos, so nicer than the chemical portaloos. On your way up to the start Green and Orange start runners can also use the loos under Bath Rugby’s Riverside west stand. See the Runners Village map for more details.
| || No race pack? |
Our phone lines are always extremely busy in the days running up to the race. Our office will close midday Friday when we move to site. If your race pack hasn’t arrived, please do not worry. Pop along to the Runner’s Village behind Bath Sports Centre on North Parade Road at the weekend to collect a pack. The Information Tent is open on Saturday from 10am-4pm and on Sunday from 8am. Saturday will be less busy. For full details regarding replacement and substitute race packs and charges, please see our website
| || Listen to your body |
The most important piece of advice we can give at this stage is to listen to your body. If you’re injured or are unwell (with a fever or vomiting or diarrhoea) 7-10 days before the race then you shouldn’t take part. This is always the hardest thing to say to runners, and it is the last thing that runners want to do, but it is a really important health message and one that should be taken seriously. If you can’t run due to injury or illness, please notify us of your cancellation and return your race pack to us before race day to receive a ‘Guaranteed Entry’ for the 2019 Bath Half Marathon. This will allow you an extended period until 31st August to register your entry at the ‘early bird discount’ price.
| || A message from our 2018 Lead Charity - Alzheimer's Society |
Alzheimer’s Society are absolutely delighted to be the lead charity for this year’s race and want to say a huge thank you to our team of 600 who have turned their half marathon into care, research and a cure for people with dementia. We’re hoping to raise a staggering £180,000 from this event which wouldn’t be possible without the support of our superstar fundraisers. Thanks to you, we will make even greater progress towards our vision of a world without dementia. We wish everyone running the very best of luck, and look forward to seeing you in action!
| || You did it! |
The digital clock on the finish gantry will show your provisional ‘gun’ finishing time. The IPICO timing chip on your shoe will automatically record your start and finish time as you pass over the timing mats. We aim to get all results onto our website on Sunday evening. The finish line in the Bath Half is busier than the runway in an international airport, with over 150 runners crossing the line every minute at peak time! It essential we keep the finish area clear to avoid runners backing up across the line behind you, and to allow us space to identify and treat any runners who need medical attention. Please keep moving when you cross the line. We recommend that you pre-arrange to meet supporters and fellow competitors at one of the designated meeting points in the Runners Village.
| || Battle of the Bands |
We are delighted to announce our 2018 Battle of the Bands line up for race day. These wonderful bands will be entertaining our runners and spectators around the course. After the race we’ll be asking runners to vote for their favourite band, and the winning band will receive £500. You can see the full line up on our website
| || Best spots to watch the race |
If your friends and family are heading down to cheer you on, then why not pick a place now where you will know to look out for them on the course and pre-arrange a place to meet after the race. You can see our recommended viewing and entertainment spots on our course map, and find some more tips and suggestions over on our Bath Half blog.
| || Corporate Challenge Tent |
This year we are providing an exclusive marquee for Corporate Challenge entrants, in the centre of the Runners Village, near the Information Tent. A space to mingle before and after the race, and to shelter from the weather, with refreshments, your own posh trailer loos and baggage drop off. Access will be by wristband passes, posted to all entrants. If you want to leave your kit please tear off the detachable tag at the bottom of your race number and thread through the end handle of your bag before handing to our volunteer team. All baggage is left at the owners own risk and the organisers cannot be responsible for any loss or damage caused by the use of these facilities. If your wristband pass has not arrived, don’t worry, our volunteers will have the Corporate Challenge entrants list and can issue a replacement.
| || Good luck from Heart |
With not long to go until Race Day, all of us at Heart wanted to take this opportunity to wish you the very best of luck with your run, whether you’re aiming to beat a personal best or just taking in the scenery. You can turn up the feel good with Heart wherever you go by downloading our app or you can listen online here. Once you cross that finish line, be sure to check out the other events taking place in your area at heart.co.uk. Happy running!
| || Good Luck from Bath Life |
Good luck to all the Bath Half runners from Bath Life! We are so proud to be media partners with such an incredible event, and it has been amazing to see the exceptional level of hard work, dedication an fundraising in the lead-up. We’ll be at the sidelines cheering you on!
| || Complete your medal with an iTAB |
Why not personalise your Bath Half Marathon finisher medal with your name and finish time? The personalised iTAB sits neatly in the recess on your medal. and it will help you to remember the Bath Half Marathon 2018 and your achievement for years to come. Ordering your iTAB is very easy after the event…we’ll share the order link with you post-race.
| || Not running? |
If you have decided not to run this year then please send your race pack and timing chip back to us and notify us that you will not be running. Our timing chips are reusable, so it’s a shame if they don’t make it back to us. Help us recycle and keep our costs down for next year’s race.
If your race pack is unopened, just cross out your address on the front and post it back to us free of charge marked ‘Return to Sender’. Or if your race pack is already open please just post your timing chip back to us free of charge in the small pre-paid envelope.
Runners who notify us and return their race pack to the half marathon office before race day will be offered a Guaranteed Entry for next year’s race – for an extended period at the new ‘early bird discount’ price (note: this does not apply to Platinum, Diamond, Silver & Gold bond charity entries). You can read full cancellation & refund details on our website
